Dead Hedges

PeasPark

Joey O'Gorman

In 2026, Joey O’Gorman will be embarking on a project to create some structural dead hedges for PeasPark, which using existing green material to create variations in this neighbourhood habitat for insects and small mammals.

Joey is a Belfast-based artist, working with drawing, sculpture, video and installation to explore speculative modes of enquiry.

His practice-based research into co-creating ecologies with non-human collaborators, acts as an affective engagement with relational space. A starting from which to empathise with alternative perspectives and modes of world building.

In the face of accelerating environmental degradation the work looks to uncover the hidden and obscured relationships in which we are embedded, tracing connections to the communities we share our lives with.

About the artist:

O’Gorman was a co-director of the artist-run organisation Catalyst Arts. Here he collaborated with local and international artists to explore alternative modes of organising and build community. He gained an MFA Fine Art with distinction before going on to complete a PhD at the Belfast School of Art. His doctoral research explored ecological space, using fermentation, drawing and diagramming as methodologies for generating novel ways of describing and engaging with ecology and spatial relations. He has recently shown work at the Leitrim Sculpture Centre (2022, Ireland), PS² and Flax Arts Studios (2024, Belfast).
